Tess Burton (born June 10, 1985 in Luxembourg City ) is a Luxembourg politician . She is a member of the LSAP and has been a member of the state's parliament since 2013 .

Career

Burton grew up in Grevenmacher and describes himself as a "Maacher girl". After studying media studies in Cologne , she returned there, helped her parents ' publishing house , opened a gift shop and finally took over the chairmanship of the city's business owners' association. In 2004, Burton was selected as the Luxembourg Wine Queen .

politics

In 2011, Burton was first elected to Grevenmacher's parish council. In the chamber elections in 2013 and 2018 , she ran in the constituency of the East, but in second place behind her party comrade Nicolas Schmit, she initially missed entry into the country's parliament on both occasions. Since Schmit was appointed to the government as a minister in 2013 and therefore had to give up his mandate and voluntarily renounced his seat in 2018 to run for the EU Parliament instead in May 2019 , Burton was able to move up to parliament for him . During her first term of office, she took over the deputy chairmanship of the audit committee, and in the second also took over the leadership of the committees for agriculture, viticulture and rural areas as well as for families and integration.

After Labor Minister Nicolas Schmit announced in the summer of 2016 that he wanted to switch to the European Court of Auditors , Burton had already been considered a promising candidate for a cabinet post. Schmit remained in office until the end of the legislative period. After the 2018 chamber election, the administrative lawyer Paulette Lenert, who also came from the party district East, was appointed to the government headed by Xavier Bettel . The appointment sparked criticism because Lenert had not made a big impact within the party, had not run for parliament and because of her age would not stand for a required rejuvenation in the cabinet. From party circles, the decision was justified by the fact that there were doubts about Burton's qualification for a ministerial post. Due to the disregard of Burton, the board of the Young Socialists of the East District, which had supported her application, resigned as a whole.

Within her party, Burton was chairman of the Eastern District Association from February 2015 to February 2019, and since then, as before, she has been its vice-president.
