Test Icicles was a London- based band that existed from 2004 to 2006 and combined different punk and indie rock- oriented styles in their music .

Although the Test Icicles were formed in the UK, there was only one Englishman in the band - Rory Attwell. Both Sam Mehran and Dev Hynes are from the US, but Hynes grew up in Edinburgh and Mehran lived in Adelaide, Australia for a few years before moving to London .

Her music can mainly be assigned to hardcore and dance punk , but musical elements from some other genres can also be found, such as: B. Indie rock or alternative rock .

The name is not derived, according to the record company from the English word "testicles" (dt. Testicles ) from, but refers more to the testing of icicles (Engl. Icicle) on strength and strength to this to use as a weapon. This explanation is controversial in fan circles, because another early joint side project by Attwell and Mehran was simply called "Balls" (eggs as a vulgar term for testicles).

In the spring of 2006 the band broke up.

history

In 2004 Rory Attwell and Sam Mehran met in London , and soon thereafter they worked together musically, initially as balls . This band existed only a few weeks, during which a demo CD was put together, a little later Test Icicles were founded. Devonte Hynes joined The Unicorns in Brighton as a support act for The Unicorns in Brighton that same year after the third band member left , and then remained a permanent member of the band.

When the band had recorded a demo, it was first distributed among the band members' friends and acquaintances until it ended up with a record company by chance. This invited the Test Icicles to studio recordings for the songs in order to record the demo tape again in better quality. It wasn't until this new version of the demo came into circulation that other record companies became aware of the band, until finally Domino Records , who u. a. Bands like Franz Ferdinand or The Kills have signed up to get the contract.

In October 2005 the album For Screening Purposes Only was released in Great Britain, in November also in Germany, through idiosyncratic appearances in shows like Sarah Kuttner and a few club gigs in the winter of 2005/06, the band became better known in Germany.

The American tour planned for 2006 was canceled by the Test Icicles in advance, the record company confirmed a little later that the reason for this was the breakup of the band after the UK tour - allegedly the Test Icicles project was only for one person from the start planned for a limited time. The band's homepage and official Myspace profile were emptied or deleted in November 2006.

After the band split up , Rory Attwell founded the band RAT: ATT: AGG in spring 2006 , which renamed itself to Wrists in August 2007 and has been a music producer since the late 2000s. Devonte Hynes started the Lightspeed Champion and later Blood Orange project . From 2009 Sam Mehran published music under the project name Outer Limits Recordings and worked as a music producer. He was found dead in his Los Angeles apartment on July 29, 2018 .
