The four-pointed mosses ( Tetraplodon ) are a genus of deciduous mosses from the family Splachnaceae .
Surname
The generic name is derived from tetraplous = fourfold, odous, odontos = tooth and refers to the teeth of the peristome that are approximated to four .
features
The mosses have ovate to lanceolate, pointed, whole-edged or serrated leaves with a thin-walled cell network.
The seta is usually elongated and quite thick, the apophysis (capsule neck) is well developed, but not inflated, about as wide and similarly colored as the theca (urn, part of the spore capsule that contains the spores). The 16 peristome teeth are initially connected to form four double-pair teeth, later grouped into eight pairs. The columella (central column in the spore capsule) does not protrude beyond the capsule mouth after the lid has been removed.
Location claims and distribution
The species settle on animal corpses, dung and dung. They are mainly found in the northern hemisphere, also in South America, in tropical Africa and in New Guinea.
