The Teufelssteine are a rock formation up to 35 meters high at 750 m above sea level. NHN meters high in the upper Ore Mountains . The rocks, known for their climbing routes, are located in the north of the city of Johanngeorgenstadt in the Saxon Erzgebirgskreis , Germany.
Location and surroundings
The Teufelssteine are located in the Steinbach valley north of the Steinbach and Neustadt districts belonging to Johanngeorgenstadt . In terms of natural space, they are in the east of the Western Ore Mountains , the eastern border of which is the Schwarzwasser . The Teufelssteine are in the area of the "Steinbachtal Nature Trail". They can be reached via the "Steinbachweg" and the "Schimmelgut" from Steinbach, the "Rundwanderweg Kanzelstein" or the "Graupnerweg" from Erlabrunn .
geology
The devil's stones are made of Eibenstock granite , which is coarse-grained in this area and contains the minerals feldspar, quartz, mica and tourmaline. Today's distinctive shape of the rocks was created by rainwater and crevice frost ( wool sack weathering ).

The Teufelssteine are part of the low mountain range near Johanngeorgenstadt , a Natura 2000 area of European importance.
tourism
In 1925 the Teufelssteine were made accessible for climbing. Today there are 110 climbing routes and variants on the massif and the rock needle, which reach a height of 34 meters. The difficulty levels according to the UIAA scale of the 16 climbing routes designated by the Alpine Club range from II (moderate) to VIII + (extremely difficult).
The climbing area consists of the Teufelsstein and the Teufelsstein massif. The Teufelsstein massif consists of six sectors:
- A sector: Upper Teufelsstein massif
- B Sector: Devil's Wall
- C Sector: Little Devil's Wall
- D sector: horsefoot
- E sector: little devil
- F Sector: Steinbach Tower
The “Steinbachtal Nature Trail”, which provides information about geological conditions and rare plants and animals, and the Erzgebirge – Vogtland ridge trail lead past the Teufelssteinen .
