BBEdit is a proprietary text editor for macOS (formerly Mac OS X and OS X), which is aimed primarily at programmers and web designers. It was introduced on April 12, 1992 as a program for Macintosh System Software 6 and has been continuously developed since then.

Bare Bones Software, based in Bedford (Massachusetts) in the USA, offered a free, functionally restricted version in addition to the paid version: Up to version 6.1 this was BBEdit Lite , later TextWrangler . With version 11.6 of BBEdit, these restricted variants were discontinued in summer 2016; instead, the unlicensed demo version of BBEdit now offers a comparable range of functions on a permanent basis.

Functions

BBEdit masters syntax highlighting for many different programming languages . Next one is FTP - and SFTP integrated support, as well as the ability to compare different versions of files. Some development environments can use BBEdit directly as a source code editor.

The range of functions of BBEdit can be extended by the user through scripts . It is also possible to add syntax highlighting for additional programming languages.

reception

BBEdit is described as a “powerful editor” “with many well thought-out and useful functions”. In 1997, the magazine c't emphasized the powerful search-and-replace function. The technology website Lifewire counts the free BBEdit version among the best free HTML editors for the Mac. In 2012 the Mac magazine Macworld praised the platform-independent, high-performance word processing function of BBEdit.

history

The following is an excerpt from the version history of BBEdit relating to the supported operating system versions of Mac OS and macOS. BBEdit Lite sometimes had a different minor version number (but the same major version number; for example, BBEdit Lite 4.1 had the code base of BBEdit 4.5). TextWrangler had its own version number that is not listed here.
