Tlgadintsi ( Armenian Թլկատինցի Tghkatintsi ), actually Hovhannes Harutiunian ( Հովհաննես Հարությունյան , * 1860 in the village Tlkatin, Ottoman Empire ; † 20th June 1915 at Harput ) was an Armenian writer and teacher. He wrote about village life. He was Rupen Zartarian's teacher and fell victim to the Armenian genocide in 1915 .

Early life and education

Tlgadintsi was born in 1860 with the name Hovhannes Harutiunian in the village of Tlkatin (now Kuyulu ) ten miles south of Kharpert. His father was a farmer who died when Tlgadintsi was young. Nevertheless, his mother was able to give him an education. After finishing community school, he continued his education at the Smpadian School in Kharpert, where he studied Classical Armenian , grammar, geography and mathematics.

Career

In 1878 Tlgadintsi graduated from the Smpadian School and worked as a village school teacher in Kiğı and Palu . Immediately after the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78 , which led to widespread misery among the Armenian population, he worked as a journalist. He also worked as a teacher and as an author in Çüngüş , and in the 1880s he sent reports to the Istanbul newspapers “Arevelk” and “Masis”. He wrote a satirical sketch in the newspaper "Hairenik" about an American missionary and her activities in an Armenian village. This work, the first that he published under the name "Tlgadintsi", was widely read.

Tlgadintsi lived in the Kharpert area all his life. His stories focus on experiences from quite ordinary villages.

In 1887 he founded the Azgayin kedronakan varzharan school in Kharpert, became its director in 1888 and remained so, with one interruption, until his death. The school stood next to St. Hagop's Church and was known as the Central School or "Red College" because it was painted red. It was also referred to simply by Tlgadintsi's name.

In 1895, at the height of the anti-Armenian massacres , the school was burned down. With the return of normalcy, Tlgadintsi and a few colleagues managed to open a few classes in another building. The move back took place in 1900.

assassination

In 1915 Tlgadintsi found shelter in the house of a Muslim friend from childhood. He was later picked up and detained. It was then that he learned that his wife, six daughters, and son had been deported. On June 20, 1915, Tlgadintsi was murdered near his birthplace. His wife and seven children were never seen again.
