Ban Thakho is a village in the extreme south of Laos in the Khong district of Champasak province . The place is located on the east bank of the Mekong in the south of the Si Phan Don area ( four thousand islands ) near the island of Don Phapheng and thus directly north of the Khong Phapheng waterfall , the north-eastern main cascade of the Mekong falls, which is the largest waterfall in Southeast Asia .

Due to its location by the waterfall, Thakho became a tourist destination; the tourism is one of the main sources of income of the village. A road leads from the village to a southern lookout point on Khong Phapheng.

The national road 13 connects Ban Thakho with the main cities of the country; the provincial capital Pakse is about 160 km away. Neighboring places are Set Tai , Nakasong and Khinak in the northwest and Veun Kham, only a few kilometers away, on the Cambodian border in the south.

Thakho is also important as a planned site for a hydropower plant : On September 28, 2008, the Laotian state energy supply company Electricite Du Laos (EDL) concluded a cooperation agreement with the French Compagnie nationale du Rhône (CNR) for the construction of a hydropower plant near Ban Thakho. The project plans to divert water from the Mekong at the site and to use the height difference of the waterfalls to generate electricity.
