The Art of Self-Defense is a film by Riley Stearns that premiered on March 10, 2019 at the South by Southwest Film Festival and was released in US theaters on July 12, 2019 .

action

After being attacked by a wandering motorcycle gang on the street one night, shy accountant Casey Davies joins a neighborhood karate studio to learn how to protect himself. Under the watchful eye of a charismatic sensei and the karateka Anna, who owns a brown belt, Casey gains a new self-confidence. After he also lived this outwardly and came into confrontation with his boss Grant, he lost his job and subsequently worked as an accountant for the karate studio. However, when he takes part in Sensei's mysterious night classes in the dojo, he discovers a previously unknown world characterized by brutality and hyper masculinity , against which he subsequently rebels, so that it comes to a confrontation with the Sensei.

Jesse Eisenberg took on the leading role from Casey Davies, Alessandro Nivola plays his new Sensei .

The German dubbing was done by Martin Sabel , commissioned by the CSC-Studios, Hamburg. Konrad Bösherz lends his voice to Casey in the German version.

The film premiered on March 10, 2019 at the South by Southwest Film Festival and was released in US theaters on July 12, 2019. In June and July 2019 it was screened at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and the Munich Film Festival , in July 2019 at the Fantasia Film Festival and in August 2019 at the Melbourne International Film Festival. In October 2019 he was presented at the Haifa International Film Festival in the Midnight Madness section.

In the USA, the film received an R rating from the MPAA , which corresponds to a rating of 17 and over. In Germany, the film was approved by the FSK from the age of 16.

The film has so far convinced 83 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 7.3 out of a possible 10 points.
