The story of Big Al , alternatively The Secret of Big Al (original title: The Ballad of Big Al or Allosaurus: a Walking with Dinosaurs Special ) is a documentary by the British broadcaster BBC from the year 2000. It is an animated film at in which computer-animated elements were integrated into real landscape shots.

action

The documentation shows how the Allosaurus Big Al could have lived. The chapters in the story are separated by Als Age. The action takes place in prehistoric Wyoming in the Jurassic 145 million years ago . In addition to Big Al's "biography", other dinosaurs are also presented and shown, such as a herd of Apatosaurus or a Brachiosaurus . Otto Clemens explains the scenes shown.

The film begins with Als Birth. It hatches from an egg and then has to fight its way out of the nest. Then the family moves away from the nest, as little predators like Ornitholestes have already found their way. Now the small allosaurs are looking for prey for the first time and chasing insects and scorpions. When the mother goes hunting, a teenage allosaur attacks the newly hatched and kills one of Als' siblings. Then there is a time jump, which Al shows at the same age as the attacker from back then. He is on the hunt, but does not dare to attack an ornitholestes. He does not attack the Othnielia either, as they are near a stegosaurus . So he has to make do with a chameleon . Later he roams the countryside and comes across carrion. A dead stegosaur rots in a swamp. This stench attracts a full-grown female Allosaurus, who forces Al to keep a distance. Al sees the Allosaurus sinking into the swamp.

The story jumps five years into the future and shows a herd of Diplodocus crossing a salt lake , pursued by a pack of allosaurs. One of them is Al. They separate a weak Diplodocus from the herd and wait for it to collapse from exhaustion. However, Al gets a blow in the neck from the Diplodocus. Then the allosaurs of roughly the same age eat their fill on the carcass of Diplodocus. A year later, Al has reached sexual maturity and smells a female, much larger Allosaurus. He is not interested in a mating and is about to kill Al. Months later, a drought sets in. Al takes an anurognathus as a small meal . Then he discovers a herd of Dryosaurus . When attacking the herd, Al falls and is seriously injured. His foot becomes infected and he can barely move. Eventually he dies of thirst.

Scientific basis

The film is based on the bones found by Al. All serious injuries and illnesses seen in the film were confirmed from the bone findings. After the actual film you can see a documentation of how the film was produced and the scientific work behind it. In the English original, this part of the film is called Big Al Uncovered .

Awards

The documentary won two Primetime Emmy Awards in 2001.

literature

An illustrated book for the film has been published under the name Allosaurus: A Walking with Dinosaurs Special . In addition to photographs from the film, there are also images that show Al in the 21st century. Some of these images were used in the making-off. Under Allosaurus! The Life and Death of Big Al a children's book was released.
