The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth (English for. The Sacrifice of Isaac : Rebirth ) is a remake of the computer game The Binding of Isaac and was first published on November 4, 2014.

Like its predecessor, the game is about a naked, crying boy named Isaac, whose mother receives an order from God to kill him as a human sacrifice . Isaac then flees to the monster infested basement, where he uses his tears as projectiles to defend himself and defeat the monsters.

The name of the game refers to the biblical narrative of the binding of Isaac . The game contains a lot of black humor and many more references to religious topics, abortion , illness , gender identity and suicide ; all topics that are traditionally avoided in computer games.

Gameplay

Rebirth is a 2D - action adventure game in which the player Isaac or a further 10 unlockable characters controlled by a container filled with monsters cellar as well as further level. Here the player collects various items to increase their own life energy or damage, or to be able to trigger various effects. Since the levels are generated randomly and only a few of the more than 500 possible objects, including the expansion, are placed randomly at certain locations in the game world, there are always new combinations of objects and new game experiences, which increases the replay value .

In contrast to the original, Rebirth cannot be controlled with the mouse. Instead, game controllers are supported. Furthermore, the successor supports a local co-op mode , in which the second player can enter and exit the game at any time.

development

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth was developed by the Californian company Nicalis and designed by Edmund McMillen .

The main reason for the redevelopment was to replace Adobe Flash with a new engine in order to eliminate the limitations and problems of The Binding of Isaac . The game also includes re-tuned items and enemies, 16-bit retro-style graphics, co-op mode, and game console support.

Rebirth includes all of The Binding of Isaac and its expansion Wrath of the Lamb , as well as new characters, items, enemies, rooms and more.

Release

In August 2013, during Sony's press conference at Gamescom, it was announced that Rebirth would be released on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita ; PlayStation Plus customers receive the game at no additional cost. When asked whether there was a good chance for a 3DS port, Edmund McMillen replied with "nope". Despite this rejection published Nicalis in March 2014 via Twitter a series of screenshots that the game on the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U revealed. On July 23, 2015, versions for the Wii U, New Nintendo 3DS and Xbox One were finally released in North America . In Japan the 3DS version was first released on October 28th and in Europe for the Wii U and 3DS on October 29th. The game for iOS was released in the Apple App Store on January 9, 2017.

As of September 5, 2014, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth could be pre-ordered via Steam . Owners of the predecessor received a 33% discount.

In February 2015 McMillen announced the first expansion for Rebirth named After Birth ( afterbirth on), which was published on October 30, 2015 Steam and contains additional objects, enemies and game modes.

In March 2017, the game received a digital and physical release for Nintendo Switch in North America as The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth + . The version was available in Europe and Asia from September 7, 2017.

Response and success

The game received mostly positive reviews from critics. The game received a metascore of 86%. Destructoid gave the game a 10/10 rating, commenting, " Rebirth is an amazing experience not to be missed."
