action

Young Greta from Montana ends her unhappy relationship with Cole just before she starts a temporary job as a nanny in the UK . However, Mr. and Mrs. Heelshire's alleged son Brahms turns out to be a porcelain doll, treated by the parents just like a real child. Brahms has had many nannies, but ultimately refused them all. Before the Heelshires go on vacation, they give Greta a list of rules that she should follow, since Brahms is not a child like everyone else. At first, Greta ignores these rules and does not take the warnings from the Heelshires seriously.

During her stay, Greta befriends the smart grocer Malcolm. From this she learns a lot about the family, for example that the real Brahms had died in a fire 20 years earlier, at the age of only eight .

The longer Greta doesn't follow the rules, the more strange things happen in the house. She hears children sobbing, Brahms suddenly disappears and reappears somewhere else. Finally, Greta is convinced that Brahms' spirit lives on in the porcelain doll. Meanwhile, the Heelshires write a farewell letter to their son before they go into the water together.

Greta confides in Malcolm. Malcolm explains with concern that Brahms' playmate was found dead 20 years ago, shortly before the house was on fire and Brahms was killed. Greta nevertheless refuses to leave Brahms. Because she feels responsible for feeling guilty after a previous miscarriage.

One evening, Greta's ex-boyfriend Cole appears, who has found out where she is and is harassing her. Greta rejects him and asks Brahms for help. A message written in blood tells Cole to leave. He doesn't believe that Brahms was the author and angrily smashes the doll's porcelain face.

Immediately afterwards a mirror shatters and a grown man with a porcelain mask appears: the real Brahms had lived behind the walls of the house. Brahms kills Cole with a shard of the broken doll and chases Greta and Malcolm around the house. They finally flee to the attic, where they discover Brahms' lair. On the bed there is a straw doll wearing the dress, jewelry and hair of Greta. While they continue to flee through the house, Brahms catches Malcolm. Brahms threatens to kill Malcolm if Greta leaves him. Greta escapes, but she didn't want to leave Malcolm behind and turns back.

Greta appears to calm Brahms down and send him to bed. While kissing goodnight he tries to drag Greta onto his bed, but Greta rams a secretly inserted screwdriver into his stomach before he hurls Greta against the wall in order to strangle her. She rams the screwdriver into Brahms's stomach again, whereupon they both fall to the ground. Greta and Malcolm escape.

In the final scene, a hand reassembles the broken pieces of the porcelain doll: the horror continues.

Others

A portrait of Johannes Brahms hangs in the hallway of the house , his bust adorns the music room, and Brahms' lullaby sounds ominous.

Reviews

The Boy received only two out of five possible stars at epd Film :

“... For a while, these scenes of nocturnal noises and creepy shadowy figures develop a pleasantly old-fashioned, chilling atmosphere. But the script and direction fail to develop an interesting story from the basic idea. Neither the subject of mourning nor Greta's sudden obsession for the Brahms doll is deepened. Instead of a vision there are only well-known conventions. Due to the constant tension, »THE BOY« doesn't even function properly as simple scary fun. The narrative gets lost in ever more constructed phrases and increasingly unnerving quotes from the classics. ... "
