action

An ice age broke out in 2045. Due to global warming, huge towers have been built to influence the weather and to stop climate change by cooling the planet. However, for some unknown reason, the machines cooled the earth too far, and it has not stopped snowing since then. The earth is now a frozen wasteland. The surviving humans have formed underground colonies.

Colony 7 is led by former Army Captain Briggs. He and his people can survive to a limited extent through agriculture under artificial light and livestock. Due to the cramped conditions and lack of medication, illnesses are a great danger. Many survivors have been killed by flu waves. That is why there is a strict protocol: Sick people are first placed in quarantine and given a strictly rationed segment of drugs. If her condition does not improve, a blood test for viruses will be done. If this is positive, the sick are brought to the surface. There they are given the choice: Either death by a bullet or by banishment to the ice desert. Right at the beginning of the plot, Mason, a former war comrade of Briggs, shoots a sick man, although he has decided to run, i.e. to die by exile in the ice desert. Mason believes the sick person will be back anyway and doesn't want to take the risk of infection. Sam, another survivor, is appalled by this behavior.

One day Colony 7 receives a cry for help from Colony 5, whereupon Briggs and residents Sam and Graydon go to help. Arrived there after a journey of several days, everything seems to be extinct and the snow is colored blood red. They find a man locked up. He believes in salvation because he has received a signal from people who have got the weather machine up and running again and are already feeling the mild rays of the sun. But these people lack seeds without which they cannot survive. Briggs, Sam and Graydon continue on their way and investigate the colony. You encounter wild cannibals: These have attacked the colony to eat the residents. Graydon is killed by one of the savages, the other two escape and spend the night in a nearby helicopter. The next morning they see that the savages are chasing them. They run to the next bridge. Briggs detonates some sticks of dynamite and dies in the process. Sam returns to Colony 7, which has been taken over by Mason, who now exercises his brutal rule there. The savages followed Sam. Mason tries to defend the colony while the others try to flee to the hopeful place. He shoots a propane cylinder, causing the whole bunker to explode. Sam and the other people from the colony make their way to the hoped-for warm place - with a sack full of seeds.

criticism

"Overall, this is a pretty average action thriller, [...] which in the end results in a film that runs as expected, but which also has its moments and, despite its numerous shortcomings, has one thing above all else, and that is charm (of course, the ice-cold variety ). "
