On May 15, 2011, the series was discontinued by CBS after only one season.

The focus of the series are the two lawyers Pete Kaczmarek and Nick Morelli. They jointly run the law firm Morelli & Kaczmarek in Las Vegas . Her firm also includes Lisa Tyler, a former stripper, and Zoey Walters, the attorney's assistant. Because of Nick and Pete's successful careers and the amount of time they spend at work, both of them have problems in their personal lives, most of which are addressed in a subordinate storyline.

Pete is a smart, elegant charmer who leaves nothing to be desired with women. He loves adventure, be it in court or with women. He's always looking for prestige in cases and loves fast cars and expensive clothes.
Nick Morelli
Nick is Pete's partner and a honest lawyer who is hard to beat in court. The wellbeing of his clients is important to him and he takes every case, regardless of importance, very seriously. He tries hard to put his broken marriage with Jessica back on its feet and tries to spend more time of his life with his son.
Lisa Tyler
Lisa is a former stripper. She stripped to pay for her law school. After graduation, she works in Pete and Nick's law firm.
Jessica
Jessica is Nick's still-wife, who lives separately from him and raises their son.
Zoey
Zoey is Nick and Pete's young secretary who, like them, has her heart and mouth in the right place.

Germany, Austria
For Germany, the ProSiebenSat.1 Media -Group secured the rights to the series and originally decided to broadcast it on Kabel Eins. The synchronous work began in January 2011. In the end, the series was first broadcast in German on Sat.1 on Sunday evening, directly after Navy CIS , The Mentalist and Hawaii Five-0 .
The series was broadcast on Sat.1 on March 20, 2011, the last episode ran on July 31, 2011. Overall, The Defenders achieved a market share of nine percent with an average of 1.3 million viewers or 0.73 million viewers and thus 10.8 percent of the advertising-relevant target group of 18 to 49 year olds. Even if the values have decreased since the beginning of the Sat.1 broadcast, they remained overall in the range of the station average.
In Austria, the series was broadcast from March 27 to August 14, 2011 on ORF eins .

The series has aired in Poland since November 15, 2010, and is scheduled to air in the UK from spring 2011 .

The series achieved a Metascore of 65/100 on Metacritic based on 19 reviews.
In the German-language reviews, The Defenders is described as an entertaining series, albeit with drawbacks. So rely too heavily on the presence of the main actors, whereby the supporting actors and also the cases would be neglected, accordingly there is sometimes a lack of depth. As is typical for CBS, the optics leave little to complain about. Overall, The Defenders is unfortunately not a second Boston Legal , but nice to look at.
