The Flying Luttenbachers are a fusion band that combines hardcore punk , death metal and free jazz . The group, founded in 1991 in Chicago by drummer Weasel Walter, existed until 2007 and has been active again since 2017.
history
Drummer Weasel Walter , who initially played punk and heavy metal , had reached the limit of his expressive possibilities there. Together with his teacher Hal Russell , whose real name was Harold Luttenbacher, and Chad Organ, he founded the band. In 1992 she recorded her first album Destructo Noise Explosion . Russell then left the band; in his place came Ken Vandermark and Jeb Bishop , who first became known with the band before they made a career in jazz. According to his own statements, Walter wanted to allude to the mendacity of the everyday jazz business with black energy. For a while the faces Flying Luttenbachers around 2000 with the album Destroy All Music (again with Vandermark) from the noise music starting to classical free jazz playing. “It is true that the guitar keeps rolling out bands of sheer white noise , two saxophones seem to be whistling and scrounging into the microphones over death-metallic riffs , the drums have developed a junkyard style in which the iron parts and splinters of wood are just so get confused. But in between there are always downright filigree question-and-answer games of the instruments, standing waves of sound full of anthemic fervor like in the late Coltrane and crisp unison parts that punctuate the galloping madness precisely. ”After several changes of line-up, the cellist also belonged at this time Fred Lonberg-Holm to the band. In 2003 Weasel Walter left Chicago and moved to Oklahoma , where he developed a line-up with guitar and bass.
In 2017 a France tour took place as part of the "Sonic Protest" festival, and another tour is planned for 2019.
