The HAARP Machine is a multinational band around the London- based musician Abdullah Al Mu'min, which was originally founded under the name HAARP . It combines elements of progressive metal with Far Eastern sounds and is attributed to the Djent movement.

The name is derived from the US research project HAARP (for High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program ).

history

In 2007 the musician Abdullah Al Mu'min founded the solo project HAARP. After several demo recordings between 2007 and 2009, he contacted the drummer Dan Foord of the band SikTh , which had disbanded a year earlier, in autumn 2009 , who agreed to write the drum parts for Al Mu'min's songs. However, this could not join the band as a full-time member, which is why Al Mu'min contacted the drummer Craig Reynolds shortly afterwards, who completely rewrote the drum parts of Dan Foord and, after his previous band Viatrophy had dissolved, joined the band as a full member.

After Al Mu'min changed the name of his band to The HAARP Machine to avoid confusion with a band of the same name from the USA , the band signed a recording contract with the US record label Sumerian Records in spring 2011 . In addition, the bassist Oliver Rooney and the singer Dom Sobkowicz joined the band, although the latter left the band at the end of the same year. Thereupon the band put an instrumental version of the song The Escapist Notion for free download on the Internet, which interested parties could deposit with their singing and use it to apply to the band.

After the band had been quiet for a year, they announced that Michael Semesky was the band's new singer. In addition, Alex Rüdinger, drummer of The Faceless , was introduced as a new band member, which surprised many fans because it was only then that it became known that Craig Reynolds had already left the band in July 2012. In mid-October, the band released their debut album called Disclosure , after the band had released the single Pleiadian Keys a month earlier . The band then toured the US for the first time alongside The Faceless and Revocation . At the end of January 2013 Michael Semesky, Oliver Rooney and Alex Rüdinger left the band due to personal differences with Abdullah Al Mu'min and from then on devoted themselves to their other projects. As a result, it was announced in February that singer Chris Barretto and guitarist Nicholas Llerandi from the band Ever Forthright , as well as drummer John Gillen, had joined the band. The band then performed on their first tour of Europe alongside Monuments , After the Burial and Born of Osiris between February and April , which was made difficult by the fact that the new members only had two weeks to rehearse the new songs.
