history

The Howling Void was founded by Ryan Wilson as one of a diverse projects. Aside from his other musical career, he works alone with The Howling Void and, unlike in the Black Metal and Grindcore- oriented projects such as Intestinal Disgorge or Hordes of the Morning Star , his own statements result in the form of a conceptual “meditation on mysteries by means of a huge funeral -Sound landscapes. "Wilson describes the music of The Howling Void as" self-expression through music "which he produces constantly withdrawn. The abundance of his publications in relation to other representatives of the genre is regarded as correspondingly high.

The first album Megaliths of the Abyss was released on the American death metal label Black Plague Records . Subsequent productions were published in cooperation with companies such as Solitude Productions , Avantgarde Music and GS Productions . In particular, the publications by the popular companies Solitude Productions and Avantgarde Music received international attention. The albums were often praised to average. In essence, the reviewers judged the publications of The Howling Void as typical representatives of the genre without profound independence. Said Jan wiping Frankowski ruled by the webzine metal.de about Nightfall , offering the album "Audible - only far nothing unique or particularly exciting" whereas Stephan Rajchl the Webzine metal1.info The Darkness at the Edge of Dawn stroke of a pen as "Musically perhaps too unspectacular, but nonetheless spherical and touching ”. PMH similarly assessed Megaliths of the Abyss in a review written for Stormbringer.at with the assessment "Fans of Skepticism , Thergothon or Evoken are allowed to risk more than just a short detour - although THW is not yet quite the class of this FuneralDoom- Master "achieve.

concept

In an interview with the webzine metal1.info, Wilson describes the music of The Howling Void as “part of a self” and “reflection of a large part of a personality” as well as “a kind of therapy.” The melancholy and closeness to nature result from the initial basic ideas of music.

“It's generally about being isolated , closed off and caught in an endless loop of misery and futility. So yes, very melancholy. In order to convey these feelings, I use nature metaphors . "

style

The webzine Doom-Metal.com describes The Howling Void as “an incredibly slow and grieving funeral doom band with an immense, synthesized- generated atmosphere.” An essential characteristic of the music is the potential for dark emotions such as sadness , grief and depression to evoke. Genre representatives such as Tyranny and Until Death Overtakes Me are cited as a benchmark . Wilson names funeral performers such as Shape of Despair and Thergothon as the main influences for the music played with The Howling Void , but also Emperor , Sunn O))) and Arvo Pärt , performers who are assigned to different styles. The aim of the music is "to create an atmosphere that is as engaging as possible".

The instrumentation is described as appropriate to the genre. So "most of it takes place in the lower tempo ranges and you are already familiar with the massive rhythm guitars that keep breaking over the other instruments like meter-high waves". The unique selling points in the genre are always "wobbling and pulsating keys and guitar leads " as well as "the serene, melancholic lead melodies and the extensive clean guitar arrangements." The vocals vary between clear vocals, which are extensively presented on some albums, and the guttural growling of earlier releases .

“I used growls on the first couple of albums but then decided to change my vocal style for various reasons. First, I wanted to add another layer of atmospheric to the music and I felt that I could do that by using the voice as another tuned instrument. Second, I've developed a kind of phobia that I might damage my vocal cords and hurt my throat. That's probably irrational, but I guess that's the nature of a phobia. "
