The doctor Dr. Faraday, who was born the son of a housemaid but made a modest existence in the country, is called to a patient at Hundreds Hall, where his mother was once employed, during the long, hot summer of 1947. Hundreds Hall has been the home of the Ayres family for more than two centuries, but the demise of the ancient house is now imminent. Faraday puts his medical skills at the service of the family. The strange occurrences in Hundreds Hall soon pile up.
