The Monofones is a music trio from Bern , Switzerland . It plays a mix of garage rock , trash and punk and is known for shows with pyrotechnic effects.
history
The Monofones were originally founded by Matthias Hämmerly (guitar, vocals) and Michael Laubacher (drums). Hämmerly and Laubacher met during their training at the Bern University of the Arts , where Hämmerly studied classical jazz and Laubacher polyrhythmics . Both played in other bands before The Monofones, Hämmerly with the Fuckadies and Laubacher with the Never Evers. Gisela Feuz had performed for many years as rock DJ Olive Oyl in various clubs in Switzerland before she came across an advertisement by Hämmerly and Laubacher in a record shop in Bern.
Hämmerly and Laubacher liked Feuz's voice, as it had originally been trained in new folk music . Feuz became the band's singer under the pseudonym Miss OO. After a year in the practice room, The Monofones released their first album "Limited" on the Bern record label Subversiv Records. The album was recorded with a Tascam four-track tape recorder in the practice room and numerous concerts and tours at home and abroad followed. B. Germany, Greece and Croatia. In addition, the monophones continued to work in the practice room and so the second album “Deranged” was released in 2009, which in turn was followed by numerous concerts in Germany and abroad, including in England, the Czech Republic and France. In addition, the Monofones drew attention to themselves in the summer of 2010 with a motorway service station tour across Switzerland.
At the end of 2010 singer Miss OO was diagnosed with vocal cord nodules on the vocal cords, which forced the trio to take a concert break of ten months. Thanks to intensive speech therapy therapy, Miss OO's vocal cords recovered to such an extent that concerts could be played again from Winder 2011 and new songs could be worked on at the same time. Hämmerly and Laubacher had used the compulsory break to continue their musical education. In the summer of 2011, Hämmerly attended a workshop by Bruce Dickinson at the London College of Music , while Laubacher has been teaching part-time polyrhythmics at the University of the Arts since summer 2011 . The third album Superhits! was released in September 2012, the Viertling Nuts followed in 2015. For their 11th birthday in 2018 , the Monofones gave themselves an album, or rather: their guitarist. Hämmerly is a big fan of heavy metal and hard rock, which is why the fifth album Fröm Höll mainly features cover songs by bands that were groundbreaking for the young Hämmerly for his later musical work.
Music genre
Although all members of the Monofones have had a professional musical education, an extremely reduced and minimalist form of garage rock is sought, with elements of punk , trash and rock music from the 1960s .
