The Nightingale (Original title: The Nightingale ) is an Australian western by Jennifer Kent , who directed, wrote the script and acted as co-producer. The film is a mixture of western revenge and drama and is about a young woman who wants to take revenge on herself and her family after an atrocity committed.
The Nightingale celebrated its world premiere on September 6, 2018 at the Venice International Film Festival . It will be published on June 25, 2020 by Koch Media in Germany.

The film is set in Tasmania in 1825. The Irish woman Clare lives as a convicted felon with almost no rights in the British colony. She hopes that the English lieutenant Hawkins will soon give her the freedom he has been promising her for months. However, he does not want to let her go. After Hawkins gets into an argument with Clare's husband and is thereby deprived of his own promotion, he and his cronies kill Clare's husband and daughter and jointly rape the helpless woman.
As the men leave the settlement the following day, Clare and the native Billy follow them into the Tasmanian jungle and seek revenge.

The Nightingale received mostly positive reviews. The film currently has an average user rating of 7.3 / 10 on IMDb.com. At Rotten Tomatoes , 86 percent of the 229 reviews evaluated were positive.
The authenticity and the historical processing were praised by various media. The online magazine ThrillAndKill.com describes The Nightingale as "an overall strongly narrated film that gives insights into a history that is rather unknown in Europe and, without swinging the moral club, takes up the ever current topic of racism."
Filmstarts .de called the film "an oppressive and never an end in itself-brutal historical drama with shocking horror insertions and three outstanding leading actors."

The Nightingale was u. a. Awarded the Australian AACTA Award in six categories in 2019 (best film, best director, best leading actress, best supporting actress, best script). He was nominated in 15 categories. In 2020, the film received nine AFCA Awards, including best film.
In total, The Nightingale won 23 awards worldwide.
