The Perfect Vagina ( The perfect vagina ) is a British documentary by Lisa Rogers and Heather Leach from the year 2008 . He treats the topic of cosmetic vaginal surgery as a fashion trend , mainly from the point of view of the women concerned.

The film first aired on Channel 4 on August 17, 2008 .

action

At the beginning of the film, 36-year-old Lisa Rogers says:

“I decided to make a film about women and vaginas because I want to understand why women want their parts cut off. I think we women are obsessed with our appearance, we put ourselves under too much pressure: perfect hair, perfect face, perfect breasts, narrow hips, perfect buttocks, depilated legs, flat stomach - and the question is always: who do we want for have these interventions? For ourselves? Maybe also, but it is more likely that we want to be attractive to men. "

and

"I'm trying to find out why there are an increasing number of women in the UK who seem to hate their vaginas."

Lisa Rogers decides to investigate the question and goes on a journey to personally familiarize herself with the facts and to interview various people.

First, Lisa visits her GP , who tells her that the number of labioplasties in the national health system has doubled in the past five years. With this information, she confronts her liberal husband, who says that he doesn't care in the least what the genitals of her friends look like: "The amount of hair down there is the only thing that stands out." In a Brazilian waxing salon it can be epilated . She learns from the employee, who is familiar with the subject, that the whole uncertainty about her own vagina began after the legendary "bikini wax episode" from Sex and the City .

She discusses the subject with four young men who are friends: Can an imperfect vagina be a reason for separation? The unanimous opinion of the group is that this topic does not matter to them ( no concern ). During the subsequent conversation with Lisa's mother and her three friends, the mood is subdued. The parents' generation is not used to discussing intimate details in public ( weird situation ).

Lisa travels to Brighton to see the sculptor Jamie McCartney. For his sculpture The Great Wall of Vagina, he made impressions of the female reproductive organs. Lisa has an impression made and compares her anatomy with the variety of other shapes. To clarify the question of why young women are operated on, Lisa goes to a surgeon who declares that he is also operating on 16-year-olds. In his opinion, an indication is present when significant anatomical deviations mean a massive reduction in the quality of life of the patient. It shows a picture of a young woman with massively enlarged inner labia . Lisa lets the surgeon examine her.

Back at home, Lisa meets two craftsmen who work there. She asks both of them about the importance of the appearance of female shame. The answer is frank and direct: “It's like presenting a meal. You have to have something that looks nice before you taste it. "

During her internet research on her home computer, Lisa came across the topic of the operative restoration of the hymen . She went to a Muslim youth center and met a young woman there who wanted to undergo this procedure. The Muslim woman describes her relationship with a man who had not told her that he was already married. To avert the family shame, a wedding was arranged for her, at which she must be a virgin.

On the last stop of her journey, Lisa meets a 32-year-old friend. The last three years after the birth of her child, she had had problems with her genitals ( feels like a flappy tunnel ) and now urgently wants to have an operation. Both visit a therapist for holistic psychosexuality. Women meet there to examine and talk about their genitals in groups. Lisa and her friend attend the meeting.

Throughout the course of the documentary, 21-year-old Rosie is shown in episodes, who, because of her sister's derogatory remarks, decides to undergo surgery to reduce the size of the labia . The surgical procedure under local anesthesia and the follow-up treatment are shown in detailed images, which are very painful for Rosie.

Lisa Rogers closes the documentary with the words:

“I've seen surgeons and alternative therapies and I've come to my own solution that doesn't cost a penny: It just doesn't matter what the vagina looks like. Love her."

criticism

“Rogers insists that she must first learn about her own genital area in order to study the problem in depth. But her willingness to do the rock out for her interviewees - Brazilian waxer, surgeon, a sculptor who specializes in vaginas, and a holistic psychosexuality therapist who encourages women to talk about their genitals - doesn't add much to her research at. Nonetheless, it was a shocking look at a widespread trend. "

“For some women, just watching the film might be helpful. But if we're looking for 'another way', shouldn't we encourage women to grow their pubic hair back? Many women's labia seem to fit better into their natural environment. A return to pubic hair would save many women a lot of pain, not to mention money and worry. "
