The Revenant (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the soundtrack to the film The Revenant , composed by  Ryūichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto with additional music by Bryce Dessner . It was released digitally by Milan Records on December 25, 2015 and on CD on January 8, 2016.

Emergence

In September 2015, the Japanese musician  Ryūichi Sakamoto was officially announced as the film composer for The Revenant by director Alejandro González Iñárritu . The two had met after Iñárritu used some of Sakamoto's songs in his 2006 film Babel  . After a year of hiatus after being diagnosed with throat cancer , The Revenant marked Sakamoto's return to the music industry. In October 2015 it was announced that Carsten Nicolai (under the pseudonym Alva Noto) and Bryce Dessner  (from the band The National ) would support Sakamoto on the soundtrack. Among other things, this was necessary because, according to Sakamoto, “a gigantic amount of music” was required for the film.

The soundtrack was received largely positively by critics. It was nominated for “Best Film Music” at the Golden Globe Awards and the British Academy Film Awards in 2016 , but each time it was defeated by Ennio Morricone's soundtrack for The Hateful Eight . For the 2016 Academy Awards , the soundtrack was not approved by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences because it came from more than one composer.
