Ryzom (formerly The Saga of Ryzom , cf. German Rhizom ) is a free massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) for the Windows , macOS and Linux operating systems from the former French independent game developer Nevrax .

There are German, English, French, Russian and Spanish language versions. It is approved by the USK from 12 years of age. Playing on the official servers costs after a free trial phase up to level 125 to 8 euros per month and user profile.

As the first classic MMORPG, it allowed players to bring their own extensions into the game. There is the expansion Ryzom Ring ( ), which contains an editor with which players can create their own game content, which can also be uploaded to the official server and then used by others. Ryzom has a programming interface (API) through which the events in the official game worlds can be tapped live.

Production manager and development consultant was Jessica Mulligan .

Game content

The game is set 2,000 years in the future. It includes science fiction and fantasy elements in a complex story that is divided into episodes and continued in three expansions (chapters) that were gradually released up to 2005. The player stands between two religions striving for world domination. He can ally himself with one of them. One is a nature-loving, magical faction called the "Kami", the other a highly technical, which believes in an extraterrestrial origin of their species, called the "Karavan". They have been at war since episode 2.

The game won the 2005 Reader's Choice Award from MMORPG.com for best game story.

Game system

The player moves through the game world on foot or on mounts in an observer or first person perspective and fulfills individual and group missions. For the game character, you can choose from four races, which are associated with different simulated ecosystems within the game world (desert, lake landscape, forest, jungle ), but hardly have any different characteristics. Experience points can be collected in four skill areas (professions) and new skills can be acquired on a regular basis. The game system simulates a day-night and a season cycle of 16 days and different weather conditions (rain, wind, snow), which influence the behavior of creatures and discoverable materials. Equipment is made of materials that have come from the bodies of slain enemies or that have to be collected and that can vary in quality. This depends, among other things, on the experience of the collector and in turn influences the quality of the products made from it. The game world changes, with every now and then new areas being accessible or others being blocked. The game enables voluntary player-player battles as individual as well as group battles or even mass battles.

Engine

The game is based on a 3D game engine called NeL (from Nevrax Library ), which consists of several program libraries developed in C ++ and is released as free software under version 2 of the GNU Affero General Public License (AGPL) . It runs on Windows, Linux and macOS and supports the graphic interfaces OpenGL and DirectX and for sound output DirectSound , FMOD , OpenAL and XAudio 2. The engine offers so-called dynamic model degradation , whereby the geometric complexity and other display quality features of the characters depend on the Number of figures in the field of view can be reduced dynamically. This means that hundreds of characters can be displayed at the same time in mass battles. With dynamic terrain degradation , the same is also available for play terrain . The individual clients can be synchronized with the events of the common game world with only up to around 2,500 bytes per second (with several hundred units in the area). An artificial intelligence controls the creatures depending on the simulated environmental conditions. Among other things, it simulates hunting and group behavior.

history

The game has been in development since 2000. Information about the game was first released on December 9, 2002, when Wanadoo was announced as the publisher . There was a public beta test from April to June 7, 2004, and the game was officially released in September - originally as The Saga of Ryzom . From the 16th the currently four game servers were open, but due to delivery problems with the client software, the 20th went down in history as the official start date. In August 2006 the name was shortened to "Ryzom" for marketing reasons. On October 3, 2006, the expansion The Ryzom Ring was released, which includes an editor.

In late 2006, Nevrax went bankrupt . A group of former employees, gamers, and free software advocates attempted to buy the entire game out with an appeal for donations and support from the Free Software Foundation , which pledged $ 60,000 in financial support. This failed, however, with the collected € 172,988 of the € 200,000 required.

Instead, Gameforge bought Nevrax on December 21, 2006 and with it the rights to the game. Gameforge wanted to market its new subsidiary Nevrax Ryzom, but this was not very successful. Gameforge France also went bankrupt. After that, the community started a spin-off from the engine called OpenNeL in order to ensure that the game could be preserved as free software. When the new owner created a new platform in 2008 to support the free development of the engine, it was put to sleep until further notice and its advances were incorporated into the main official branch there. After half a year of downtime in 2008, gaming operations were resumed. The Cypriot company Winch Gate Property Ltd. has been continuing the paid subscriptions as the new owner since May 2009.

On May 6, 2010, the Free Software Foundation announced that the source code and game content had been delivered to them. The game is to be made available under version 3 of the GNU Affero General Public License (AGPL). All artistic content should be placed under Creative Commons attribution - sharing under the same conditions (CC-by-sa). However, this does not affect the world itself, it is still only playable via the official server. The FSF speaks of probably the largest contribution to the free games so far. Winch Gate wants to encourage crowdsourcing of development work.

A native Linux client has been available since November 30, 2010, which was developed on the basis of the release with the support of the Free Software Foundation.

The Mac version of Ryzom has been available in the Mac App Store since April 15, 2011 .
