Le sel des larmes (international title: The Salt of Tears , German: "The Salt of Tears") is a French - Swiss feature film by Philippe Garrel from 2020 . The love drama in black and white , for which the director co-wrote the screenplay, is about a young student (played by Logann Antuofermo ) who stands between several women and at the same time vies for his father's approval.

The world premiere took place on February 22nd, 2020 as part of the competition at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival . A cinema release in France is planned for April 8, 2020.

Luc, who comes from the French provinces, travels to Paris . He applied as a cabinet maker for the entrance examination at the local art school École Boulle . Once in the capital, Luc gets lost in the banlieues and by chance makes the acquaintance of the shy Djemila, with whom he has a short, romantic adventure. He then returns home, where he is received by his father and his girlfriend Geneviève. Luc impregnates his childhood friend. The relationship with the father, who is also a carpenter and envisions an excellent future for his son, is characterized by acceptance and rejection at the same time. He finally returns to Paris successfully accepted at the school. There he is eagerly awaited by Djemila.

When she notices her pregnancy, Geneviève turns to Luc's father. He in turn wants to stand up for the young mother. In the meantime, however, Luc met a third young woman in Paris with whom he now lives.

Le sel des larmes is the 27th feature film as a director for Philippe Garrel who wrote the screenplay with his long-time companions Jean-Claude Carrière and Arlette Langmann . He shot the film in black and white, using Renato Berta as cameraman, who had previously worked with him on his last two works, Lovers for a Day (2017) and In the Shadow of Women (2015). Actress Louise Chevillotte also worked on Lovers for a Day , while theater actor Logann Antuofermo is making his film debut in the leading role of Luc.

The shooting was scheduled from April 2 to May 24, 2019.

The film was produced for Rectangle Productions by Édouard Weil , who most recently worked with Garrel on A Burning Summer (2011) and La frontière de l'aube (2008). Was co-produced Le sel des larmes by Arte France Cinéma in cooperation with the Swiss Close Up Films and Radio Télévision Suisse . The French distributor is Ad Vitam; the worldwide exploitation rights are held by the German company Wild Bunch .

A first trailer for the film was released in November 2019.

Awards

With Le sel des larmes Garrel competed for the first time for the Golden Bear , the main prize of the Berlinale. But the film did not receive an award.
