description

Thelocactus setispinus grows spherical to short cylindrical. The soft fleshy body is fresh green and about 8 to 12 centimeters wide and can grow up to 60 centimeters high with age. The 13 rather narrow and slightly notched ribs are humped. The short, white felted areoles are 10 to 12 millimeters apart. The 12 to 15 radial spines are needle-shaped, radiant, brown or white and up to 4 inches long. The 1 to 3  central spines are longer and stronger, straight and curved like a hook at the tip. This typical thorn has given the plant the nickname hooked cactus .

The red-throated, yellow flowers are 7 inches long. The red fruits are dry when ripe and crack open at the bottom. They are round or elliptical about 8 to 10 millimeters thick, a little scaly.

There are a lot of invalid double descriptions and recombinations and a multitude of synonyms . The most important of these are Hamatocactus setispinus (Engelm.) Britton & Rose and Ferocactus setispinus (Engelm.) LDBenson .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (CR) ". H. listed as not endangered.
