The Thelyschista ghillanyi orchid , the only species in the Thelyschista genus , is native to eastern Brazil.

description

Thelyschista ghillanyi is a relatively large, terrestrial herbaceous plant. The roots are clustered together, they are fleshy, cylindrical and hairy. The leaves form a basal rosette. They are oval-shaped, they end pointedly or rounded at the front, at the base they taper into an indistinct petiole. The leaf margin is slightly wavy and almost transparent.

The flowering period extends from December to February. The racemose inflorescence is erect, the tip sometimes slightly sloping. The inflorescence axis is hairy glandular. It is partially covered by lanceolate, hairy and ciliate bracts . The bracts, which are also hairy, are oval and pointed. The ovary is sessile, obliquely spindle-shaped, slightly twisted and pointing diagonally upwards, it is also hairy. The numerous, close together flowers are tubular, their color is light green to white. The sepals are shaped more or less the same as one another, not grown together, they are roughly parallel to one another and thus form a tube with outwardly curved tips. They are hairy glandular on the outside. The lateral sepals are widened like a bowl at the base. The petals lie against the dorsal sepal and adhere to it with their inner edges, their tips are free and wavy at the edge. The lip is sessile and unlobed, the sides are bent upwards and adhere to the column . On the side of the wedge-shaped base there are two linear nectar glands, the lip is hairy on both sides. The middle part of the lip is hairless and oval with a smooth edge, the front part is rounded with a wavy edge. The column is quite fleshy and thick, hairy underneath. It extends beyond the point of attachment on the ovary, this "column foot" forms a depression together with the base of the lateral sepals. The scar consists of two separate surfaces. The stamen is narrow oval, blunt in front. At the base it is surrounded by a membranous, two-part tissue of the column (clinandrium). It contains the narrow club-shaped pollinia that hang on a large, tongue-shaped adhesive disc (Viscidium). The separating tissue between the stamen and stigma (rostellum) is flexible and triangular with a two-part tip. The capsule fruit is oval.

Occurrence

Thelyschista ghillanyi occurs endemically in eastern Brazil on sandy soils of the Campos Rupestres at altitudes between 700 and 850 meters. The habitat is characterized by a pronounced dry period, fires occasionally occur.

Systematics and botanical history

Thelyschista ghillanyi is the only species in the genus Thelyschista . The species was described in 1977 by Guido Frederico João Pabst and placed in the genus Odontorryhnchus . Leslie Garay established a separate genus for this species in 1982. The name Thelyschista is made up of the Greek words θῆλυς thelys , "female", and σχιστός schistos , "divided"; it refers to the split scar. The specific epithet honors the Brazilian orchid lover Anton Baron von Ghillany (1912–2001).

Thelyschista is classified within the tribe Cranichideae in the subtribe Spiranthinae . It is similar to some types of Odontorrhynchus , but is probably more closely related to Stenorrhynchos .
