Themístocles da Graça Aranha (born January 27, 1894 in Rio de Janeiro , † January 2, 1956 in The Hague ) was a Brazilian diplomat .

Life

Themístocles da Graça Aranha was the son of Maria Genoveva de Araújo and Graça Aranha . The father had a liberal phase until 1902, in which Élisée Reclus was part of the reading material for the son. Temístocles Graça Aranha married Adelaide Cardoso de Castilho, their daughter is Teresa Maria de Castilho Graça Aranha.

Aranha holds a Bachelor of Laws from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro . From 1916 he was transferred to Paris as an attaché , where he was appointed second class secretary in 1918. As such, he worked from 1920 to 1925 in Lisbon and from 1925 to 1928 in Bern , where he was appointed chargé d'affaires in 1927 , and from 1928 to 1931, also chargé d'affaires, in Stockholm . Subsequently, Aranha was appointed Secretary of the First Class and from 1931 to 1932 appointed Chargé d'affaires to Buenos Aires . In 1934 he was employed as the Brazilian chargé d'affaires in Helsinki and from October 1938 to August 26, 1939 in Berlin .

Graça Aranha learned about the November pogroms of 1938 from trading houses owned by Brazilian citizens who were Jews under the Law to Restore the Civil Service . He applied to the Reich Foreign Ministry for protection for his compatriots and sent a circular to the consulates in his jurisdiction to act analogously. A Brazilian merchant was attacked in Cologne , whereupon the responsible consul, Pericles Barbosa Lima, applied to the police chief for protection, which was the first time that a head of a Brazilian diplomatic mission intervened at the Foreign Office on behalf of Jews.

From 1940 to 1944 he headed the Department of Cooperação Intelectual do Itamaraty as second class envoy in the Departamento de Imprensa e Propaganda and was then employed as consul general in Cape Town until 1945 .

From June 24, 1948 to April 24, 1954, Aranha worked as envoy extraordinary and ministre plénipotentiaire in Cairo , before he was finally appointed as ambassador to The Hague on May 18, 1954, where he died in 1956.
