Theobald von Bar (Liège)

Theobald von Bar (* around 1263 ; † 1312 ) was bishop of Liège from 1303 to 1312 .

Theobald was the son of Theobald II , Count von Bar and Jeanne de Toucy. The Metz bishop Rainald von Bar was his brother. He was canon in Metz, Toul and Verdun and had benefices in Paris, Beauvais, Reims, Le Mans, Lincoln, Troyes and Liège. In 1296 his attempt to become Bishop of Metz failed , the cathedral chapter elected Friedrich von Lorraine as well as Theobald. Pope Boniface VIII, called on as arbitrator, chose a third candidate, Gérard de Rhéninghe . During Theobald's tenure there was fighting between two parties in the city, the Grands and the Petits, supported by the cathedral chapter . Theobald accompanied Henry VII on his Italian expedition. He was killed in Rome in May 1312 during fighting between the supporters of Henry and the King of Naples , Robert of Anjou .
