Count Theodor Heinrich von Strattmann (* 1637 ; † October 25, 1693 ) was an Austro-German diplomat and Imperial Chancellor under Leopold I.

Career

Strattmann, descending from an aristocratic family from Kleve, began his career in the service of the Elector of Brandenburg , and later of Elector Philipp Wilhelm von Pfalz-Neuburg in Düsseldorf , where he was appointed Vice Chancellor. Presented by his sovereign at the imperial court in Vienna, he entered the service of Leopold I.

As a diplomat, among other things, he was involved in Leopold I's marriage with Eleonore von Pfalz-Neuburg (1676) and in negotiations during the peace negotiations in Nijmegen (1678/79). From 1680 to 1683 principal envoy in Regensburg , he was called to Vienna in 1683 for the position of court chancellor. He owed this position not only to his ability, but also to his status as an impartial foreigner in Vienna. In 1685 he brokered the marriage of Max Emanuel von Bayern with Leopold's daughter Maria Antonia . From 1687 to 1690 Strattmann worked to secure the Hungarian royal crown hereditary for the Habsburgs. Despite his extensive powers as chancellor, Strattmann remained an honest broker and always left the final decision to the emperor.

Private life

His first wife was Mechtilde von Mollard (1640–1684), whom he married on July 2, 1661 in Utrecht. Two of Strattmann's children from this marriage were Heinrich Johann Franz von Strattmann (born 1668 in Kleve, later Ambassador to the Netherlands) and Eleonore Batthyány-Strattmann (born 1672).

After several years as a widower, Strattmann got his second marriage on May 15, 1691 in Vienna to Maria Margarethe Magdalena Countess von Traun-Abensperg , widowed Countess Buquoy (1649 - December 5, 1706), the heir to Ferdinand Ernst III. Julius Graf von Abensperg and Traun-Meissau (March 26, 1608– November 18, 1668). This marriage remained childless.
