Life

Theodor Kozlowski, the second son of a mathematics teacher, passed his Abitur at the Berlin Gymnasium zum Grauen Kloster . He then completed an apprenticeship as a surveyor . In this function he was involved in the construction of the Berlin-Potsdam-Magdeburg Railway in 1845 . From 1845 to 1847 he attended the General Building School in Berlin, where he was trained as a master builder of land and roads. From 1850 he worked in road construction. Further qualifications followed. In 1853 he became a state master builder, in 1855 water and road builder and finally in 1879 a railroad builder. He was then appointed building inspector in March 1862 . At the same time he was given the management of the Genthin hydraulic engineering inspection . Here he was responsible for configuring the Ihlekanals and especially the locks Bergzow , Ihleburg and the first lock Niegripp.

Kozlowski, who also worked as an expert on questions relating to structural engineering, then became director of the Elbe River Construction Directorate at the Upper President in Magdeburg in April 1866 . Extensive construction work took place under his direction, which served to regulate the mean water level in the Elbe and thus to improve the fairway depths for shipping. In addition, he was given the management of various other hydraulic engineering projects. Kozlowski also directed work on the Stecknitz Canal in the Duchy of Lauenburg . Kozlowski also campaigned for the introduction of continuous chain shipping on the Elbe.

In 1880 Kozlowski was transferred to the Prussian Ministry of Public Works in Berlin. He remained active in this authority until his retirement at the end of 1898. Most recently he held the title of a secret senior building officer .
