Theodor Lockemann

Theodor Lockemann (born March 20, 1885 in Sülbeck , † February 9, 1945 in Jena ) was a German librarian .

Born as the son of the mill and salt works owner Hermann Lockemann, Theodor Lockemann attended the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Hanover from 1898 and studied first natural sciences, then literary history, history, philosophy and religious studies at the universities of Heidelberg , Göttingen and Leipzig . One of his brothers was the professor of chemistry Georg Lockemann . During his studies he became a member of the "Student Choir of Georgia Augusta" (today StMV Blue Singers ). In 1912 he was promoted to Dr. phil. PhD . In 1914 he passed the state examination. Since 1921 he was a member of the Prussian examination committee for the middle library examination. In 1923 he temporarily researcher at the publishing house BG Teubner in Leipzig, then became a laborer at the University Library in Jena and 1913 auxiliary librarian of the German Library in Leipzig. In 1914 he became head of the Elbing City Library . Lockemann was drafted into military service on May 4, 1916. He received the Iron Cross 2nd class. After the First World War he took over the management of the city archive in Elbing. On August 1, 1926, he took up the position of director of the university library in Jena. On August 18, 1933, Lockemann was given the title of "professor". On July 1, 1935, he joined the Lutheran Confessional Community in Thuringia, his membership card bears the number 4478.

From September 1941 to September 1942 Lockemann was part of the head of the Weimar State Library . In the last years of the war he also had contacts with the resistance of the Neubauer-Poser group .

Lockemann published Luther's Von der Freiheit eines Christenmenschen (1913) and, together with Ms. Schneider, was the editor of the register of the Jena Academy 1548-1557 (1927). He published numerous articles in professional journals and yearbooks.

Lockemann died together with eleven employees in an American bomb attack on Jena on February 9, 1945 under the rubble of his library.

Theodor Lockemann had two sons and two daughters. His daughter Luise Lockemann married Finke (1917–2002) was a successful athlete.
