Alfred Ehrentreich (born June 18, 1896 in Potsdam ; † April 11, 1998 in Korbach ) was a reform pedagogue , headmaster and author.

Family and education

Ehrentreich was born the son of a hydraulic engineer who was employed in the machine works of the Sanssouci Palace . He studied English, French and German at the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg im Breisgau and at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin. In 1920 he received his doctorate in Berlin on the subject of the quantity of tone vowels in Modern English on the basis of experimental studies . He married the daughter of the educator Wilhelm Schwaner , Anneliese, called Annlis (* April 4, 1901, † February 22, 1985).

Professional development

From 1922 he worked as a teacher under the headmaster Martin Luserke in the reform-pedagogical free school community Wickersdorf near Saalfeld in the Thuringian Forest . When, after years of conflict over Gustav Wyneken, there was a secession of various teachers, other employees and students in the mid-1920s , he moved to Berlin-Neukölln to the Kaiser-Friedrich- Realgymnasium (from 1929/30: Karl-Marx-Schule ) was headed by Fritz Karsen . Between 1925 and 1934 he was one of the sponsors of the school by the sea on the North Sea island of Juist , which was founded and run by Luserke, and was involved in the “outer community”, where he worked with Paul Reiner, for example .

After the transfer of power to the National Socialists , the Karl Marx School , the forerunner of today's comprehensive schools, was closed. Ehrentreich was briefly banned from working ; after a few months he was transferred to a Berlin girls' school. Ehrentreich was appointed as warehouse manager (KLV manager) of the Kinderlandverschickung , a topic that he dealt with in his book Dresdner Elegie . After the end of the Second World War Ehrentreich initially worked as a teacher in Kassel for a short time , then on the recommendation of school councilor Hans Habermann he was given the management of the old state school in Korbach , which he held until his retirement in 1962. Here, too, Ehrentreich tried to integrate elements of reform pedagogy, for example the participation of the students.

Ehrentreich was involved in an international school partnership from 1953, which later became a town twinning between the town of Avranches in Normandy and Korbach. Between 1966 and 1972 he was active in the corresponding municipal committee in Korbach. He was also a co-founder of the Korbach Adult Education Center, the theater week there and the initiator and organizer of a large number of music events and art exhibitions.

Ehrentreich died at the age of 101.
