history

13th to 15th centuries

The first known documentary mention is in 1327 as Ortlieb Zvendel von Teraczpurch. At the end of the 14th century, the castle fell directly to the Counts of Hardegg-Plain. It was the estate of Berthold II, Burkhards III and Johann II. In 1430 Jan von Fladnitz is attested as the keeper of the Counts of Hardegg . Robber barons Kratzer used them from 1473 for forays, among other things, to the nearby Rittsteig.

16th to 18th century

In 1523 the castle was imperially conquered. In 1574 the knight Jakob von Raming, Colonel, converted it into a Renaissance castle. In 1645 it was destroyed by Swedish troops under General Lennart Graf Torstensson during the Thirty Years' War . In 1674 Georg Julius Freiherr von Gilleis, also owner of the lordship of Missingdort and Kattau, came into the possession of Therasburg.

19th to 20th century

In 1823 Joseph Graf von Gilleis is listed as the owner. The last of the Gilleis family , Julius von Gilleis, leased and later sold Therasburg to his son-in-law, Count Hermann von Attems, Baron von Heiligenkreuz . In 1842 the castle, which had not been inhabited for about 150 years, was restored. During the redesign, Hermann Eduard Graf von Attems-Heiligenkreuz had the tower re-roofed and the second floor of the main building removed. Restored in 1893 by Maximilian Graf von Attems-Gilleis . with a new bay window and a newly built second castle tower. On July 6th, 1903 the excursion of the Lower Austrian Forestry Association took place at the Waldhäuschen. During the Second World War , the holdings of the University Library of the University of Vienna as well as the important reference works of the catalog room of the Austrian National Library were housed here, as in Schloss Horn, Schloss Rosenburg and more than ten other locations - the other books were distributed across eight other locations.

description

Therasburg consists of a stone bridge with the remains of the former drawbridge over the moat, a two-story main castle with a round arched portal with a white sandstone frame and a separate tower. The building is under monument protection by decision of the Federal Monuments Office . The ogival pedestrian access of the former gate entrance has been preserved and you can see from the details that a former drawbridge existed. A two-arched bridge now crosses the neck ditch, which was probably used as a former quarry for the castle. In the valley, the Therasburger Bach flows around it, a direct feeder to the Pulkau .

forestry

The management used to be done in plenter operations in contrast to today's removal of bark beetles damaged areas, drought, wind and snow breaks. The first forest management was carried out in 1897: The predominant wood species in the high forest was white pine , then spruce , sometimes also fir , and also oak , linden and birch . In the coppice they were oak, linden , birch and willow . The forest floor is of medium quality. The weathering product of gneiss and shimmer slate. Large areas of former fields were afforested at the turn of the century. There was a separate tree nursery for planting.

Surroundings

Neighboring castles and palaces are the ruins Nonneck in Pulkau , Baroque castle Riegersburg , Castle Fronsburg and Castle Schrattenthal .

Trivia

Mr. Kaudelka, administrator in Therasburg, harvested 3.8 kg of soybeans from 300 yellow soybeans in 1876. An imposing larch in the Therasburger Valley is named after the manager.

In June 2010, lightning struck the bridge and explosively destroyed the wing wall on the south side.
