Theresia Hebenstreit (* 1950 in Wiesbaden ; † October 20, 2015 ) was a German painter and sculptor . She brought up to 1001 naked women on stage at the same time and created a unique selling point for herself with her “voluminous, self-confident female figures made of clay”.

Life

Theresia Hebenstreit was born in Wiesbaden in 1950 and graduated from high school in 1968 . She studied from 1979 to 1981 Ceramics - Design at the Fachhochschule Wiesbaden . In 1980 and 1984 she completed study visits to England and between 1995 and 2000 studied cultural anthropology , art history and ethnology at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . She fell ill with bone marrow cancer in 2003 and lived until her death in the Wiesbaden district of Dotzheim , where her studio is also located.

Profession and honorary positions

Between 1986 and 1997, Hebenstreit was chairwoman of the Hessen Arts and Crafts Association and from 1993 to 1999 German delegate in the World Crafts Council . From 1998 to 1999 she held a substitute professorship at the Koblenz University of Applied Sciences and at the same time headed the Institute for Artistic Ceramics in Höhr-Grenzhausen .

Memberships

Since 2008 Hebenstreit was a member of the Association of Visual Artists (BBK), the cultural initiative thalhaus Wiesbaden and for ten years until her death a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany .

Theresia Hebenstreit was best known for her voluminous female figures made of clay , which she shaped in sizes from 15 cm to one meter. In addition to paintings depicting their figures, these were also shown in book form and calendars. With these sculptures, the "blissful women", her oeuvre became "unmistakable". The exhibition 1001Naked that she organized at Tangshan University , People's Republic of China , was her major project "with which she presented her answer to the Terracotta Army internationally".
