Thimerfonat , also timerfonat , is an organic mercury compound and a benzenesulfonic acid that has been added to vaccines to keep them sterile since the 1930s . It was mostly used as sodium salt. However, organic compounds containing mercury are no longer used for human vaccines.

Thimerfonat was contained in many bacterial vaccines ( cholera , pneumococci ), in flu vaccines and also in vaccines against diphtheria . The WHO had once no objections to the application. Neither the EMA nor the Institute of Medicine saw any scientific evidence of a link between vaccinations and autism or other neurological disorders in children. The FDA endorsed this assessment.

Sodium timeronate is listed by the EU on the list of pharmaceutical substances that are duty-free .
