Tiruvottiyur ( Tamil : திருவௌற்றியூர் Tiruvoṟṟiyūr [ ˌt̪iɾɯˈʋotːrijuːɾ ]; also Tiruvotriyur, Thiruvottiyur ) is a district of Chennai (Madras), the capital of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . Tiruvottiyur forms one of 15 zones ( zones ) Chennais and comprises 14 districts ( wards ).

Tiruvottiyur is located in the north of Chennai around ten kilometers north of the city center on the coast of the Bay of Bengal . Tiruvottiyur is connected to the city center of Chennai by the Chennai Suburban Railway and numerous city bus routes. The main roads of Tiruvottiyur are the Tiruvottiyur High Road and the Ennore Expressway, both of which run parallel to the coast in a north-south direction. The heavy traffic to the port of Ennore north of Tiruvottiyur and the poor condition of the roads lead to frequent traffic jams. There are also problems in Tiruvottiyur due to insufficient drinking water supply and coastal erosion .

Tiruvottiyur is the site of an important Hindu sanctuary, the Tyagarajaswami Temple. He is consecrated to the god Shiva in his appearance as Tyagaraja. The temple of Tiruvottiyur is sung about in the Tevaram , a collection of devotional hymns from the 7th and 8th centuries. The oldest inscriptions in the temple date from the time of the Chola rulers Parantaka I (907–955) and Uttama (973–985). The main shrine was rebuilt during the reign of Rajendra I (1012-1044). The history of Tiruvottiyur goes back further than the Chennais, which was only founded by the British in the 17th century .

By 2011 Tiruvottiyur was an independent municipality ( municipality ) in the district Tiruvallur with an area of 21.4 square kilometers and 248,059 inhabitants (2011 census). In terms of population, Tiruvottiyur was the tenth largest city in Tamil Nadu. But the place had long since grown together with Chennai and became part of the Chennai agglomeration . With the city expansion of Chennai, Tiruvottiyur was also incorporated into Chennai administratively. The new Tiruvottiyur zone was formed from the former municipality of Tiruvottiyur and the city of Kathivakkam , which was also incorporated .
