Thomas B. Cueni

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Beat Cueni (* 1953 ; resident in Zwingen ) is a Swiss lobbyist on behalf of the pharmaceutical industry . From 1988 to 2016, the graduate economist was General Secretary and Managing Director of Interpharma , a small but powerful lobby group for the “research-based pharmaceutical companies” in Switzerland. Under Cueni's leadership, the pharmaceutical industry has not yet lost an important vote in parliament . In other words, he successfully intervened in public and in the Parliament's foyer and influenced votes in the interests of industry. Since 2017 he has been General Director of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA).

Career

Cueni studied economics at the University of Basel (Diploma) and political science at the London School of Economics and Political Science (M.Sc, 1981). After several years as a journalist for the Basler Zeitung and the Bund in London, Cueni switched to the diplomatic service in 1983 and worked in Vienna ( IAEA , UNIDO ) and Paris ( OECD ) for the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs . In 1988, the 35-year-old Cueni became General Secretary and Managing Director of Interpharma . In this role he also represented the pharmaceutical industry in the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations , where he was active as head of the Economic and Social Policy Committee (ESPC). Since February 2017 he has been Director General of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA) in Geneva.

effect

Cueni has excellent connections both with Swiss politics and with European politics. He is one of around 220 regular visitors to the Wandelhalle, the vestibule of the Swiss Parliament. So Cueni has always secured one of the coveted guest cards for the foyer. In his Swiss lobbying work, Cueni is considered to be extremely effective. Die Zeit writes : « […] nobody is doing 'this basic work' as effectively as Interpharma […] », and states: « under his [Cuenis] aegis, the pharmaceutical industry has not lost an important referendum […] ». This assessment of Cueni is also shared by the Tages-Anzeiger . He writes: « […] one of the most powerful is Thomas Cueni […] ». Even after 26 years at the head of Interpharma, Cueni still clings to the aura of the invincible. And one of Cueni's successes is the referendums on the gene protection initiative, the transplant law, the drug law or the reproductive initiative, which he won with a “full war chest” and “the cleverness of their campaign leader”, which were in the interests of the pharmaceutical industry .

In addition to these activities in Switzerland, Cueni is also active in international organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. For example, Cueni also sits on the steering committee of the European Union's Access to Medicine initiative or serves as the chairman of a pharmaceutical task force to answer parliamentary questions and thus also influences European politics.
