Life

Thomas Grynaeus grew up as the son of a farmer in Veringendorf, Württemberg. Thomas Grynaeus' uncle Simon Grynaeus was a school friend of Philipp Melanchthon . He studied Greek and Latin in Heidelberg and Basel and followed Simon Sulzer to the high school in Bern , where he was professor of ancient languages from 1536 to 1546 . Due to his sympathy for the 95 theses of Martin Luther , he was dismissed in 1547 and then worked as a teacher and from 1555 as a prefect at the Basel Pedagogy . After the Reformation was introduced in Markgräflerland in 1556, he became pastor at the Röttler Church and superintendent in Rötteln in 1558 , which he remained until his death in 1564.

Thomas Grynaeus was married to Adelheid Steuber and had eleven children, including Johann Jakob Grynaeus , who later also became pastor in Rötteln.
