Thomas Hill (athlete)

Thomas Lionel Hill (born November 17, 1949 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) is a former American hurdler who specialized in the 110-meter hurdles .

Sports career

In the early 1970s, Hill, who started for Arkansas State University , was one of the best hurdles in the world. In the second June 1970 issue of the US sports magazine Track & Field News , he made it on the front page.

Hill reached the championship of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in 1972 second place. In the Olympic eliminations for the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 , he was able to win in the final before Willie Davenport , Olympic champion of 1968, and Rod Milburn .

In Munich he was able to win his preliminary run in 13.62 s and the semi-finals in 13.47 s. Like his teammates, he was one of the medal contenders. In the final on September 7, 1972, he touched the fifth hurdle and was third behind Milburn, who ran a new world record with 13.24 s, and the Frenchman Guy Drut (13.34 s) with 13.48 s. Davenport, who struggled on the eighth hurdle, only finished fourth.

While still active as a track and field athlete, Hill completed the Reserve Officer Training Corps , a training program of the United States Armed Forces , where he worked as an assistant trainer for track and field at the United States Military Academy at West Point .

Honors

In 1984 Thomas Hill was inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame . In 1996 he was inducted into the Arkansas Track and Field Hall of Fame .

After the sports career

In 1972 he received his Bachelor of Education degree in physical education from Arkansas State University . In 1976 he acquired from the Long Iceland University the Master in Counselor Education (teacher counseling). The Ph.D. in this particular subject he received from the University of Florida in 1985.

In 1993 Hill became dean at the University of Florida. In 1997 he moved to Iowa State University , where he became vice president of student affairs.

Private life

Thomas Hill is married and has two sons. His son Thomas Jr. (born 1971) was a college basketball player and played in the NBA Australasia .
