Thomas Iftner

Thomas Iftner (born July 27, 1958 in Fürth ) is a German virologist . He heads the Institute for Medical Virology and Epidemiology of Viral Diseases at the University Hospital Tübingen . His research interests in the field of papilloma viruses range from basic research and animal models to clinical studies and molecular epidemiology with over 140 specialist publications.

Live and act

In 1985 Thomas Iftner received his diploma in biology and in 1988 he received his doctorate from the University of Erlangen . His postgraduate education included a research fellowship at the University of California , Dept. of Microbiology and Immunology, Los Angeles , USA . From 1990 to 1997 he worked at the University of Erlangen, where he completed his habilitation in 1993. From 1997 to 2018 he was full professor at the Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen and head of the research section for experimental virology . In April 2018 he took over the management of the Institute for Medical Virology. He founded the Molecular Medicine course at the University of Tübingen in 2006 and has been Dean of Studies for Molecular Medicine ever since. Since 2009 he has also been Vice Dean of the Medical Faculty . He has also been an Associate Professor at James Cook University , Townsville , Australia since 2009 . Since March 2018 Thomas Iftner and Dr. Tobias Schneider is the managing director of the University Medicine Society for Research and Development mbH.

After working as a co-founder and director of the European Consortium against Cervical Cancer (ECCA, Lyon, France), Iftner has been the chairman and initiator of the Zervita project group since 2006 , whose aim is to inform the public in Germany about risk factors, prevention , early detection and treatment of cervical cancer and its To inform about preliminary stages, as well as about human papilloma viruses.
