Thomas Jordan (economist)

Thomas Jakob Ulrich Jordan (born January 28, 1963 in Biel ) is a Swiss economist and has been President of the Board of Directors of the Swiss National Bank since 2012 .

Life

Jordan grew up in Biel's Beaumont district as the son of a chief judge and attended the Alpenstrasse grammar school . He studied economics at the University of Bern . In 1993 he did his doctorate with Ernst Baltensperger with a thesis on the European Monetary Union . At work he warned of national debt and bank failures.

This was followed by a three-year postdoctoral research stay at the Department of Economics at Harvard University in the USA, where he wrote his habilitation thesis . In 1998 he was appointed private lecturer and in 2003 honorary professor at the University of Bern .

Jordan's entry into the Swiss National Bank took place in 1997 as a scientific advisor. Two years later he was appointed Vice Director of the Economic Studies Organizational Unit. In 2002 he took over the management of the research organizational unit. After he was promoted to director at the beginning of 2004, the Federal Council appointed him deputy member of the directorate or deputy head of the III. Departments in Zurich. In this role, Jordan led the financial markets division , which covers the areas of money market operations , foreign exchange and gold operations, asset management , risk management and financial market analysis.

At the beginning of May 2007, Jordan became a member of the board of directors and head of the III. Departments appointed. In April 2009, Jordan was elected Vice President of the Governing Board by the Federal Council at the beginning of 2010. He also took over the management of Department II in Bern, which covers the areas of cash , finance , financial systems and security. Following the resignation of Philipp Hildebrand , Jordan took over the post of President of the Swiss National Bank on January 9, 2012 on an interim basis. On April 18, 2012, he was appointed the new President of the Governing Board of the National Bank by the Federal Council. He will take over the management of Department I in Zurich and will be responsible for the areas of economics , international currency cooperation, law and services as well as the staff functions.

Jordan represents Switzerland on the Board of Directors of the Bank for International Settlements and on the Financial Stability Board as well as on the Board of Governors of the International Monetary Fund .

Jordan has lectured at the University of Bern since 1998, where he teaches monetary theory and monetary policy . Between 2002 and 2007 he also taught at the University of Zurich . In 2017 he received an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Economics (WWZ) at the University of Basel .

Jordan was also Vice President of the Federal Council's expert commission on the subject of “ Too Big to Fail ” from 2009-2010 .

He is married to a college professor and the father of two sons.
