Thomas Martin (paleontologist)
Thomas Martin (born May 22, 1960 in Darmstadt ) is a German paleontologist .
Martin studied geology and paleontology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and Eberhard Karls University Tübingen (diploma 1987) and received his doctorate from the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn (1991) under Wighart von Koenigswald on the enamel microstructure of the teeth of fossil rodents ( hystricognathi ). In 1992/93 he was a post-doctoral student at the Institute of Sciences de l´Evolution at the University of Montpellier . The habilitation on the Dryolestidae from the Upper Jura of Portugal followed at the Free University of Berlin (1997), where he had been a research assistant with Bernard Krebs since 1991 . In 1997/98 he was a research assistant at the Philipps University in Marburg .
Martin became an adjunct professor at the Free University of Berlin in 2003. After research stays in New York (1999 as a visiting scholar at the American Museum of Natural History ) and Pittsburgh (2004/2005 as a Max Kade Fellow at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History ), he first became Section Head for Mammalogy at the Senckenberg Research Institute in Frankfurt / Main (2005). In 2006 he switched to the chair for paleontology at the University of Bonn at the Steinmann Institute for Geology, Mineralogy and Paleontology. He thus succeeded his doctoral supervisor Wighart von Koenigswald.
Martin's work focuses on the microstructure of tooth enamel and the evolution of Mesozoic mammals . Together with Bernard Krebs he worked on the rich Jurassic site of Guimarota (Portugal). Martin named and described several early mammals (e.g. Asfaltomylos from Argentina or Spinolestes from Spain).
He recently dug in the Junggar Basin in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region in northwest China (Upper Jura, Qigu Formation), in southern Patagonia (Cretaceous) and Berezovsk in western Siberia (Middle Cretaceous).
He has been co-editor of the Journal of Mammalian Evolution since 1996.
In 1993 he received the sponsorship award from the German Society for Mammal Studies. From 1999 to 2004 he was a DFG Heisenberg fellow . He is the Vice President of the Paleontological Society .
