Thomas Matthew Burns SM (born June 3, 1944 in Belfast ) is a Northern Irish religious and emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Menevia .

Life

Thomas Matthew Burns joined the religious order of the Marist Fathers and was ordained a priest on December 16, 1971 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Military Bishop of Great Britain on May 24, 2002 . He received his episcopal ordination on June 18 of the same year by the Archbishop of Westminster , Cormac Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor ; Co- consecrators were Francis Walmsley , Military Bishop Emeritus of Great Britain, and Patrick Kelly , Archbishop of Liverpool .

He was appointed Bishop of Menevia on October 16, 2008, and was instituted on December 1 of the same year. Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on July 11, 2019.
