Thomas Nguyên Van Tân

Thomas Nguyên Van Tân (born December 27, 1940 in Bãi Xan , Vietnam ; † August 17, 2013 ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and bishop of Vĩnh Long . His name combines western naming tradition ( Thomas as first name before the family name Nguyên ) with Vietnamese ( Van Tân as a personal name is behind the family name).

Life

Thomas Nguyên Van Tân studied philosophy and theology at the Pontifical Seminary of St. Pius X in Đà Lạt from 1961 to 1970 . He received in the December 21, 1969 Vinh Long , the ordination . After studying for a doctorate at the Roman Pontifical Gregorian University from 1971 to 1974, he was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD. From 1974 he taught at the seminary in Vĩnh Long, in 1988 he was appointed professor of moral theology in the seminary in Cần Thơ and in 1992 he was appointed professor at the diocesan seminary in Vĩnh Long.

Pope John Paul II appointed him coadjutor bishop of Vĩnh Long on May 10, 2000 . He was ordained episcopate on August 15th of the next year by the Bishop of Vĩnh Long, Jacques Nguyên Van Mâu ; Co- consecrators were Pierre Nguyên Soan , Bishop of Qui Nhơn , and Raphaël Nguyễn Văn Diệp , emeritus coadjutor bishop of Vĩnh Long.

With the retirement of Jacques Nguyên Van Mâus, he succeeded him on July 3, 2001 as Bishop of Vĩnh Long.
