Thomas Norval Hepburn

Thomas Norval Hepburn (born December 18, 1879 in Fairlee , † November 20, 1962 in West Hartford ) was an American doctor.

Hepburn was the last born child of Pastor Samuel Sewell Stavely Hepburn (1845-1932) and Selina Lloyd Hepburn, née Powell (1842-1918). He was able to trace his family tree back to James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell . After obtaining the bachelor's degree in 1900 and the master's degree in 1901 at the private Randolph-Macon College in Ashland (Virginia) , he studied at Johns Hopkins University , where he received his doctorate in human medicine.

He worked as a surgeon and urologist at Hartford Hospital, where he set up the urology center he directed. He dealt in particular with ureter disorders .

His marriage to Katharine Martha Houghton Hepburn (1878-1951) in November 1904 resulted in six children. Second born was the actress Katharine Hepburn .

Hepburn and his wife were founding members of the American Society of Sanitary and Moral Prophylaxis in 1905. In 1913 he was also a founding member of the American Social Health Association (ASHA; now American Sexual Health Association ) and was active on the board.

After the death of his wife in 1951, he married Madeline Santa Croce (1901–1990).

In the 2004 film Aviator by Martin Scorsese with biographical elements , Thomas Norval Hepburn is portrayed by Kenneth Welsh .
