General Dockery

Thomas Pleasant Dockery (* 18th December 1833 in Montgomery County , in North Carolina ; † 27. February 1898 in New York , New York ) was a brigadier general of the Confederate in the Civil War .

Life

Dockery was born in North Carolina in 1833 to Colonel John Dockery. His father moved the family first to Tennessee , then to Columbia County in Arkansas , where he built a large plantation. His father also played a major role in building the first railroad in Arkansas.

When the Civil War broke out, Thomas Dockery received an offer from the Confederate Army to command the 5th Arkansas State Troops. He accepted and led the association into the battle of Wilson's Creek in southwest Missouri on August 10, 1861 . After that, Dockery was given command of the 19th Arkansas Infantry Regiment. After the Battle of Pea Ridge on March 7, 1862, most of the Arkansas formations were moved to the east bank of the Mississippi .

Dockery and his men took part in the First Battle of Corinth from April 29 to June 10, 1862 and he led a brigade from May 18 to July 4, 1863 at the Battle of Vicksburg and the Battle of Champion Hill . On August 10, 1863, he was promoted to brigadier general. He was given command of another brigade with which he participated in the Battle of Mark's Mill and the Battle of Jenkins Ferry.

In May 1865, Dockery signed the Surrender Document to the Union Army , which applied to all Confederate forces in Arkansas. He had lost his fortune in the war.

After the war he worked as a civil engineer and lived in Houston , Texas . He died in New York City in 1898 and was buried at his daughters residence in Natchez , Mississippi .
