Thomas Schmidt (canoeist)

Thomas Schmidt (born February 18, 1976 in Bad Kreuznach ) is a former German canoeist and current functionary . He was Olympic champion in canoe slalom in 2000 .

Career

Schmidt became Olympic champion in the men's single kayak at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney . In 2004 in Athens he finished fifth. At world championships he won a title when he became team world champion in 2002. Schmidt and the team have been European champions three times. In addition, Schmidt won eight German championship titles as an adult and two more in the junior division.

In 2004, Schmidt ended his career as a competitive athlete and completed his mechanical engineering degree at the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences . Since then Schmidt has been working as a graduate engineer , but has also worked as a co-commentator for the television channel Eurosport on canoe slalom broadcasts. In November 2008 he was elected to the Slalom Commission of the International Canoe Federation (ICF).

Thomas Schmidt is married and has one daughter. He lives in Augsburg and is a member of Kanu Schwaben Augsburg , the canoeing department of TSV Schwaben Augsburg .
