Alexander Grimm (born September 6, 1986 in Augsburg ) is a former German canoeist . In 2008 he was Olympic champion in canoe slalom .

Alexander Grimm was a sports soldier and started for Kanu Schwaben Augsburg (the canoeing department of TSV Schwaben Augsburg ), where he was trained by Thomas Apel. He specializes in the boat class single kayak . At national level, Grimm won the German junior championship in 2002 and 2004 . In the men's category, Grimm won the team title in 2005, 2006 and 2007 and the individual title in 2007.

Career

As a child, Alexander Grimm first played football for FC Hochzoll . In 1995 he started kayaking. From 2002 to 2004 Grimm was a member of the junior national team and since 2005 of the men's national team. In 2002 he won silver with the team at the Junior World Championships, and in 2003 at the European Junior Championships in Hohenlimburg, bronze in singles and gold for the team. At the Junior World Championships in Lofer in 2004, Grimm also won gold in singles and silver with the team. In 2005 he appeared for the first time at the Men's World Cup in Sydney . He was 13th in the individual competition. At the European Championship in the same year, Grimm won silver with the team. In 2006 he reached second place in the world rankings. At the World Championships in Prague he was tenth in the individual, at the EM he won the bronze medal with the team. Twice he reached podium placements in the World Cup. Grimm achieved his first victory in the World Cup in 2007. He won the race in Augsburg and was third in the overall World Cup standings. At the 2007 World Cup in Foz do Iguaçu he was world champion with the team and finished 28th in the individual competition. At the 2007 European Championships he finished second with the team and seventh in the individual ranking.

In the national qualification for the German Olympic team in Beijing , Grimm prevailed against Vice World Champion Fabian Dörfler and World Cup winner Erik Pfannmöller . At the 2008 Summer Olympics he won the gold medal after fighting his way from fourth to first place in the final. Grimm was the first German Olympic champion at the 2008 Summer Games.

For this he was honored with the silver laurel leaf by Federal President Köhler.

From 2008 to 2017 Grimm studied mechanical engineering (Bachelor) as well as lightweight construction and fiber composite technology (Master) at the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences . Since 2017 he has been completing an MBA in industrial engineering at the University of Munich .

In 2018, Grimm announced his retirement from an active sports career.
