life and work

Thomas Schmidt was born in 1942 as the son of the actress Charlotte Ulbrich and the doctor Otto Schmidt and first grew up in the GDR . After the death of his father, his mother married the author and director Peter Podehl .

Schmidt was enthusiastic about science from an early age. On his eleventh birthday he got by chance the main role of the small Muck in DEFA - fairytale film The Story of Little Mook offered. The film, which was made under the direction of Wolfgang Staudte based on the script by Schmidt's stepfather, was an overwhelming success with over 13 million moviegoers in around 60 countries and is now one of the most successful DEFA productions, even though there was a performance ban in Germany at the time.

Since Schmidt's stepfather felt increasingly restricted in his creativity , the family fled from the GDR to the Federal Republic in 1955 and settled in Munich . The career as an actor was ended in 1961 after some television productions and dubbing activities.

After studying psychology and medicine, Schmidt last worked at the Institute for Epidemiology , Social Medicine and Health System Research (Director: Friedrich-Wilhelm Schwartz ) at the Hannover Medical School . He became known as the developer of a nasal douche for nasal rinsing with physiological saline solution. On July 4, 2008, Thomas Schmidt died of severe leukemia at the age of 66. He was the father of three sons.
