Thomas Seir Cummings (* 1804 in England , † November 25, 1894 in New York ) was an American miniature painter .

Life

Thomas Seir Cummings, who emigrated to North America as a child, was initially a student, and from 1822 was the studio partner of the portrait painter Henry Inman . In 1826 both were among the founders of the National Academy of Design in New York, whose board he served as vice president and treasurer from 1850 to 1853. Later he also wrote the history of the academy. With the wider spread of photography , the art direction of miniature painting, which he practiced, was increasingly supplanted; before that, Cummings was one of the most popular artists of this genre . In the 1850s, the future genre painter John George Brown was one of his students.
