Thomas student

Thomas Student (born October 28, 1897 - † February 11, 1976 ) was a German football player for FC Schalke 04 .

During the First World War, Student joined the association, which was then still called Westfalia Schalke . The defender organized the team and became the club's first team captain . With a student as a right runner , Schalke achieved their first successes. Together with goalkeeper August Sobotka , the brothers Hans and Fred Ballmann , the young Ernst Kuzorra and later Fritz Szepan , he was the guarantee for the steady rise of the club. The student who worked as a miner ("squire") - like about half of the players in the mid-1920s - did not only keep the team together in the game; he was also a committed club member. Among other things, he took care of the Ballmann brothers after they had returned from England and even accompanied them to their job as fitters at Küppersbusch , so that the two important players were not poached by another club on the way. After the war he had worked on the restoration of the playground on the Grenzstrasse - so eagerly that his widow later recalled that she "saw her husband very little during that time."

In the first Revierderby against Borussia Dortmund on May 3, 1925 in Herne , which the Royal Blues won 4-2, he helped BVB to get their second goal by causing a foul penalty. In 1926, Student reached the top division, the Ruhrgauliga, with the club, which had been playing under the name TuS Schalke 1877 since 1919 and as FC Schalke 04 since 1924, and qualified as Ruhr district champion for the first time for the finals of the German championship . After the 1927/28 season, in which the "Knappen" played again in the championship finals , he ended his football career. After twelve successful years, he passed the captain's armband on to Ernst Kuzorra, and Walter Badorek took over his role as head of defense . In 2008, FC Schalke 04 posthumously appointed him one of the club's nine honorary captains, since "without an integration figure like Thomas Student [the successes of the 1920s] would not have been possible".
